5 Things to do in Mauritius
Mauritius, known officially as the Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation located off the southeast coast of the African continent in the Indian Ocean. It is a volcanic island of lagoons and palm-fringed beaches with coral reefs surrounding most of the coastline.
The island is situated approximately 2400 kilometres off the South East Coast of Africa. The island covers an area of 1,865 square kilometres or 720 square miles, with 330 kilometres of coastline. Mauritius is 45km in width and 65km in length.
When we arrived, the driver was already waiting for us and took us to our hotel. The island is not actually big and it’s easy to orient there. Our hotel was on the north part of the island and all road went through the capital city Port Luis.
First thing: You could spend some time Port Luis. The capital city Port Luis is a place where you can stop for one day. Its beautiful in all style. You can go to hill where you can see the all town from there or you can spend time with horses. You can visit the oldest horse racing ring track called The Champ de Mars Racecourse or you can spend some time in the market where you can buy fresh fruits and different kind of clothes. When you go trough the city you will see beautiful place with umbrellas or a big bus station where all buses stopping.
Second thing: What you could do is to continue to the south where you can explore the sacred site of Grand Bassin which is the major draw of crowds in Mauritius, with many people visiting the site to pray, meditate, or simply enjoy the gorgeous surrounding views, including the towering statue of the Lord Shiva. Grand Bassin (also known as Ganga Talao) is a lake situated South East of Mare aux Vacoas in a secluded mountain area in the district of Savanne, deep in the heart of Mauritius. From there you can go visit a beautiful chamarel waterfall and the 7-coloured earth of Chamarel which is a unique volcanic geological phenomenon resulting in seven colours of earth swirled together to create a beautiful feature.
Third thing: You can take a catamaran trip to other islands like Gabriel island or Flat island. It is a whole day trip where you can see clear beautiful water and beautiful beaches. You can also explore north part of the island where you can see the most famous church which is locate in Cap Malheureux and gives a lot of nice photos possibilities.
Forth thing: is to visit botanical gardens where you can see the most famous waterlily. This picture you can see all over the internet and it’s a famous picture from Mauritius. From there you can visit safari where you can walk with lions. The walks are carried out daily during the early mornings and late afternoons as these are the cooler parts of the day. The walk takes place on the banks of Rivière du Rempart
Fifth thing: you can just relax on the beach. Try some famous Mauritius cousin because Mauritius is mix of different type of cousin. There is a big influence of Indian cousin and mix with Chines, European and African create a truly unique cousin. I enjoyed different king of food every day from fresh sea food to spice Indian sauces to European brekkie.
