Dragon Boats racing
What is dragon boating?
For those who are not familiar with this sport, dragon boat is simply boat with 20 paddlers, one drummer and one sweep. It’s a team sport in its purest form that encompasses the elements of power, speed synchronizing and endurance. With its beginning in southern china it is the fastest growing sport in the world. Each year, dragon boat festivals are held around the world in Asia, Australia, Europe, Canada and USA.
Every year is different. In 2019 there was a world dragon boat championship in Thailand, where countries around the world were racing again each other. Next year 2020 is the world championship in France where all the clubs around the world will compete again each other and Asian championship in Hong Kong where only Asian countries and Australia are invited. The usual distances are 200m, 500m, 1000m and 2k. Competitive paddlers rigorously train to the condition themselves in the area’s strength, endurance and fit form, mental focus and most important timing.
The roots of dragon boat racing go back over 2000 years to the southern province of China. The legend has it that Qu Yuan, a scholar and advisor to the emperor of the Chu Kingdom, jumped into the Mei Lo River in despair and protest against government corruption. Local fishermen raced out in their boats to save him. They beat drums and pounded their paddles on the rivers waters and threw rice dumplings wrapped in lotus leafs into river do distract the fish from eating Qu Yuans body. Dragon boating evolved from the re-enactment of this legend at annual festival.
In Australia dragon boat racing is growing, A lot of people with different gender are trying this sport for any kind of reasons. They want to be more fit, they like racing, want to have a fun on the water, they like to lose some weight or just meet new people and socialize. Dragon boats offer everything. Australia offers a lot of dragon boat clubs. You can choose the club which is the best for you. I was paddling for Naga Spirit. In the beginning Naga Spirit was the best club and was wining all the competitions but later on other clubs improve their technique and started winning. Everything is about the people in the club and I would say that Naga Spirit have nice people.
If the club is not enough for you can try paddle for state or even for Australia. I was paddling for NSW and this year when we had national in April, we won golden medals. To get in, you just need to race on oc1 again other people and you need to have the best time plus you need to do erg. Every year is different and sometimes you need to do also fitness test.
The special capitol is Australian team. Its not really hard to get in if you train a bit. You just need to paddle on oc1 or tk1, do a beep test on level 12, do a fitness test and paddle on dragon boats. I was in China last year and we won 13 medals.
Other countries are also very good like China who is really fast, Thailand, Indonesia, Canada, USA, Germany, Italy, Spain, India and others. We have also dragon boats in Slovakia but is not that popular like in other countries, but we are still growing. We are now preparing to a club world championship in France next year. You can do dragon boat any time, if you are 18 years old or 30 years old or even 60 years old. I really like this sport and I want to compete more.
